    Eighteen months ago, generative AI arrived as a clear disruption to the disciplines I have built a career on; filmmaking and cinematography. Its trajectory since has been impossible to ignore.

    Rather than treat it as a threat, I chose to engage with it directly, to understand its capabilities, its limits, and where it genuinely advances the craft.

    Generative AI is now a permanent part of the production landscape, and it is evolving quickly. Treated with rigour, it is a serious addition to the creative toolkit; a complement to traditional craft rather than a replacement for it.

    Twenty years of traditional film and photography credentials underpin every prompt. The idea is always human, the tools just got extraordinary. As co-founder and Creative Director of unreelated.com, Matt directs AI-native brand films, social impact documentaries and rapid satirical shorts. Below, a selection of recent AI-directed work.

    Through the Eyes of the Adversary: Breaking & Defending Identity

    When Radiant Logic briefed us on a promo piece for a webinar featuring cybersecurity expert Anders Askåsen and ethical hacker 'Freaky Clown' (FC, author of How I Rob Banks), there was really only one way to go. Nolan. Mann. Bigelow. The brief demanded cinematic weight - rain, masks, urban dread - to match the tone of FC's world: methodical, unsettling, precise. The film explores how identity spans both the digital and physical worlds, and how attackers exploit that overlap through social engineering, badge cloning, and on-site access converging with weak IAM practices.

    A client needed a film to open a major US sales kick-off. Two senior employees. Same name. Different continents. Instead of the obvious route, we dropped them into the Matrix - not as a gimmick, but as a shortcut to shared language. Using AI avatar work, voice cloning, and generated environments, we delivered three board-level introduction films at a fraction of traditional production cost. The Head of Marketing walked on stage in a long coat and sunglasses. The room was theirs from that moment.

    When Radiant Logic approached us to promote a webinar with legendary hacker Master OTW (Occupy The Web), we knew a standard corporate trailer wouldn't cut it. The result is a Mr Robot-inspired cinematic piece - hooded figures, glowing network diagrams, the tension of digital infiltration - built entirely with AI tools: Nanobanana for image generation, Kling for video synthesis, and ElevenLabs for the atmospheric voiceover. The exploding wall scene came from a broken generation we chose to keep. Sometimes the machine hands you something broken; your job is to recognise that the break is the beauty.

    AI Hybrid Documentary

    Our first commissioned film - a powerful short documentary tackling the critical issue of digital poverty. Working with communications company 1823 and charity SIM PAL, we blended authentic real-world interviews with AI-generated content to create a narrative that neither approach could achieve alone. The film premiered at an exclusive event at Chateau Canet in Carcassonne, France, hosted by Intuition AB as part of their IT Leaders networking event.

    Premiered at the NY Explorers Club on October 30th, 2025. How do you film an extremophile? How do you visualise microscopic life forms that survive in the most extreme conditions on Earth without prohibitive stock or location costs? The answer: AI. The entire film - images, voiceover, sound effects and design - was generated using AI tools. The human advantage is the idea and the concept. Creative vision, scientific accuracy, and storytelling expertise remain firmly human. Everything else, the machine handles.
