Paper moon
Kansas
I remember as a kid my dad making me watch "Paper Moon", the 1973 film directed by Peter Bogdanovich and starring the real-life father and daughter pairing of Ryan and Tatum o'Neal.
When Ryan O'Neal died last year I re-watched it, the first time in decades. A few days later when I was planning my cross country US road trip I dropped a Google street view pin in the middle of Kansas on a town called "Wilson". I thought It looked familiar.
I then discovered it was the home to a couple of key scenes in the movie, and the Midland Hotel was where the cast and crew stayed. As I was on a father/daughter trip I had to make a detour to take a look.
As the film was shot in 1973 it was fascinating to see how little had changed. Also how such small places like this in the middle of the US manage to survive, it was far from unique, the whole country is scattered with these "one horse" towns.
In order to attempt some form of economic interest from tourism lots of these little town have these quirky "world's biggest" random sculptures. Wilson boasts "The World's Biggest Czech Egg"...
